World Masters Athletic Championships

World Masters Athletics introduced a world championship from 1975, to be held every two years. From 2016, they will be held in even number years. This is to avoid the four yearly clash with the World Masters Games.

Men used to have to be 40 or over to enter, but since 2005 the age requirements for both men and women has been set at 35.

Primarily a track and field championship, there are a number of ex-stadia events that are held. In prior years events such as a 10km road run (1989), pentathlon (1987 and prior), 3000m (1975 and in 1977 just for for women) and 25km road walk were held. Now the programme has settled down into a standard line-up, with the most recent change being the 2013 addition of the half marathon.

At the 2016 General Assembly, a motion was passed to change the event programme after the 2016 Championships:

  • the marathon event will be replaced by the half marathon as being a mandatory part of championship programme.
  • the 10000m will be replaced by a 10km road race.
