North Island Masters
5000m
The 5000m is the longest running race in the North Island Masters Track since the 10km Road Race event was removed. The 5000m has been an Olympic event since 1912 for men and women from 1996, when women's distances were standardised to be the same as for men.

For the first couple of North Island Champs, both genders ran 5000m and then began a regime where the women were generally offered 3000m instead of 5000m. Eventually both the 3000m and 5000m were both available to men and women as separate events.

The standard programme developed for 2014 places the event on Sunday morning. Previously it was on Friday evening.
